The short version
If you want to drive a drift car yourself, two Tokyo operators run lessons on closed circuits in Chiba, about 1.5 hours from central Tokyo. Both pick you up in Tokyo, both use beginner-friendly cars, and neither needs a driving licence, because you never drive on a public road. The real differences are price, the car you get, how many people can share the booking, and what happens if you cancel.

Same Wangun OG lesson on Viator | DriftsYou drive; a passenger-only option is also listed | Lesson ¥200,000 alone or ¥120,000 each for 2 or more (Monday to Thursday); ¥220,000 or ¥130,000 on Sundays. Passenger-only option ¥120,000 alone or ¥70,000 each | Toyota Altezza option listed | "Japan Track". Meet in Shinbashi | Full refund up to 24 hours before |
Matenro sells its Viator listing under its own name. The Wangun OG one is sold as "Tokyo JDM experience", but the lesson name, car and meeting point match Wangun OG's own page, so it appears to be the same lesson. I have not had Wangun OG confirm it.
On Viator, the lowest price shown for the Wangun OG listing is the passenger-only option, not the lesson. A driver on their own pays less booking direct (¥155,000) than on Viator (¥200,000); two or more drivers pay less on Viator (¥120,000 each).
Where the lessons are
- Tokyo StationMost tours pick you up in central Tokyo or meet you there.
- Minami Chiba Circuit, 49 kmWhere Wangun OG holds its lessons, and where Matenro's Viator listing says its lesson takes place. About 1.5 hours by car from central Tokyo, according to the operators.
Distances are in a straight line from Tokyo Station, calculated from OpenStreetMap locations. Roads are longer.
What the lesson day looks like
- Pickup in TokyoAt your hotel or a station, depending on the tour
- About 1.5 h driveTo Minami Chiba Circuit (operators' figure)
- Safety briefingBefore you go on track
- On trackAbout 3 hours of lesson time
- Back in TokyoAbout 6 hours door to door
A typical lesson day, from both operators' own descriptions. Times vary with traffic.
Both operators describe a similar day: pickup in Tokyo, about 1.5 hours to the circuit, a safety briefing, then about 3 hours on track, and the drive back. Matenro says beginners work on donuts first, then figure-eights and handbrake turns if they progress, and that it ends with a ride in a replica police car "chase". Wangun OG says you finish the day holding a steady circle and also ride along in chase runs with its drivers.
How far you get is up to you and the day. Matenro's own page gives two different figures for how many beginners learn a donut (90% in one place, about 80% in its FAQ), so treat any such number as the operator's claim.
Matenro says it keeps beginners to 3 hours because a 6-hour lesson is hard to stay focused for, and offers 6 hours to intermediate drivers on request.
Which one fits you?
- You want the lowest price for one driver: Wangun OG direct, at ¥155,000, if a weekday works for you.
- You are two to four people sharing one booking: Matenro direct prices the lesson by group (¥219,800 for two). Ask how the track time is split between drivers.
- Your dates might change: either lesson on Viator, which lists a full refund up to 24 hours before. Booking direct means 72 hours (Wangun OG) or a full week (Matenro).
- You already drift and want a bigger car: Matenro offers the 180SX or JZX100 for advanced drivers at extra cost.
- You only want to ride, not drive: see which Tokyo drift tours actually drift for passenger rides.
Before you book, check
- Who drives how long. In a group booking, ask how much wheel time each person gets.
- The car you will actually get. Both operators say cars vary by day.
- The minimum age, if anyone in your group is under 18.
- What to wear. Neither operator's page says. Closed shoes and clothes you can move in are a sensible choice; this is my suggestion, not an operator rule.
- The cancellation terms on the page where you pay. They differ a lot between direct and Viator.
FAQ
Do I need a driving licence or an International Driving Permit?
No. Both operators say neither is needed, because you only drive on a closed circuit.
How old do I have to be?
Matenro says 18 or older. Wangun OG says a minimum age applies but does not give it, so ask before you book.
Can friends share one lesson?
Matenro prices one booking for 1 to 4 people. Ask how the track time is split between drivers. Wangun OG prices per person.
Is it cheaper on Viator or direct?
For one driver, direct: ¥155,000 with Wangun OG against ¥200,000 on Viator. For two or more, Wangun OG on Viator is ¥120,000 each. Matenro's group totals are about the same either way, but Viator gives a full refund up to 24 hours before instead of 1 week.
