The short version

Most Daikoku tours put you in whatever JDM car is free that night. If the car is the point, you have two ways to get the one you want:

  1. Pick the car, a local drives. Several tours sell a "VIP" or private option where you choose the model. This costs about two to three times the shared seat.
  2. Drive it yourself. A few companies rent a JDM car for a Daikoku evening and lead you there in a second car. You need a permit that is valid in Japan, and the choice of cars is small.
No driftingEither way, this is a drive on public expressways. Drifting on public roads is illegal in Japan
Price basis variesSome prices are per person, some per car, some per group. Compare the total for your group
The lot can closeA better car does not open a closed parking area. Ask what happens then
Permit to driveTo drive yourself you need a 1949 Geneva Convention permit, or an official translation for a few countries

Pick the car, a local drives

These are the tours I found that let you choose the model. A local enthusiast or the guide drives; you ride. For the shared tours where the car is random, see the Daikoku guide.

Per person or per car?

The same night can cost very different amounts depending on how the price is counted. As an example from the prices above, for two people:

These are list prices; check what each includes (tolls, pickup, how long you have at the meet) before you compare.

Drive it yourself

PermitYour home licence plus a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit, or an official translation for a few countries
AgeDaikoku Tour's R34 rental is 23 and over
Lead carOn the Daikoku sessions you follow the company's car there and back
Your finesYou drive, so traffic rules and fines are yours

Japan accepts only International Driving Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Licences from a few countries, such as France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan, use an official Japanese translation instead (Tokyo Metropolitan Police, PDF). Check yours before you book, because no rental company can fix this on the night.

Checked on 28 October 2026 on Daikoku Tour's rental page, the rental guide of its parent company Samurai Car Japan, and Viator's partner data for Only JDM. Only JDM's listing had no reviews yet, so I cannot tell you how it runs; it gives a full refund up to 24 hours before. Samurai Car Japan says its rentals are final once paid, with no refunds or date changes for a change of plans, so be sure of your permit and dates first.

Daikoku Tour's page also says the lead car leaves on time, and that if you lose it you should not chase it but head to Daikoku PA (or back to the start) on your own. Plan for that: a phone with data and a navigation app, and a passenger who can read the route.

My own JZX100 at Daikoku PA on 13 July 2025, a Sunday, around 11 pm. The lot was closed (the red sign reads 閉鎖, “closed”). A rental or a VIP car would not have changed that. Number plates blurred. Photo: chihiro.

An ordinary rental car

You do not need a JDM car to see the meet. On my second visit, in July 2026, I went in an ordinary rental car while travelling in Tokyo, and the lot was open. The permit rules above are the same for any rental. You will pay expressway tolls, and you have to find your own way back if the lot is closed. The Daikoku guide has the map.

FAQ

Can I drive a GT-R to Daikoku myself?

On the listings I checked, only Only JDM's Viator tour offers a self-drive GT-R (¥112,999 per car), and it had no reviews yet. Samurai Car Japan, which runs Daikoku Tour, says its GT-R R35, R32 GT-R, Supra and RX-7 are rides with a professional driver, not self-drive (Samurai Car Japan).

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

Yes, unless your licence is from one of the few countries that use an official Japanese translation instead. Japan accepts only permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention (Tokyo Metropolitan Police, PDF). Bring your home licence and passport too.

Is there an age limit?

Daikoku Tour's R34 rental requires the driver to be 23 or over. Its tours where a guide drives have no age limit, according to the same page (Daikoku Tour).

Will the driver drift or race?

No. These are drives on public expressways. Street drifting is a crime in Japan, and several Daikoku listings say plainly that drifting and racing are not part of the tour. For real drifting on a closed track, see which Tokyo drift tours actually drift or drift lessons where you drive.

Does a VIP car get me in if Daikoku is closed?

No. Closures apply to everyone. Some tours switch to Umihotaru or other car spots; the Daikoku guide explains the closures and what each tour says it does.
